Is the Mulligan Concept the Hole-in-One of Physical Therapy Treatments?

ree

I am a Certified Mulligan Practitioner. The skills of a CMP, Certified Mulligan Practitioner can help those who golf, but it has nothing to do with golf. I usually have a good laugh because if you ever saw me golf, you would know that I am not certified in golf. On the other hand, a Mulligan in golf is an extra golf stroke allowed after a poor shot that is not counted on the scoreboard. I have done a few of those...

I am listed on the Mulligan Concept website as one of 565 CMPs in the United States, and you will see that the Mulligan Concept providers are all over the world. So what are Mulligan Concept techniques, and how can they help people?

Brian Mulligan is a Physiotherapist in New Zealand who developed the Mulligan Concept of Mobilizations with Movement (MWM) in the extremities and sustained natural apophyseal glides of the spine (SNAGS). As Mulligan practitioners, we are taught "With the concept rule of pain-free, instant and long-lasting underpinning all clinical reasoning, no other form of manual therapy offers real-time decision making and safety. The paradigm is patient-centered and patient-controlled and has an extensive body of self-treatment options."

For the adult athletes I work with—golfers included—the Mulligan Concept offers a dynamic and empowering approach to improving mobility, easing discomfort, and enhancing performance. Whether it's addressing shoulder limitations that affect a swing or finding pain-free solutions for spinal tension, CMP techniques allow for immediate feedback and long-lasting results. While I may never land a hole-in-one, I do help my clients get back in the game—whatever their game may be—with greater confidence and control.

Some of the techniques I use include the cervical spine (neck), shoulder complex, hip mobilizations, and knee and ankle mobilizations. The amazing part is that, as Mulligan Practitioners, we teach self-mobilization home techniques as well as taping techniques.

This is a brief explanation of the Mulligan Concept and techniques that I use in my practice at Garage Training & Rehab Gym. I have been practicing Mulligan techniques for 20 years as a Physical Therapist. If you have any questions, please contact me via my website: https://www.garagetrainingrehabgym.com
